I got bored of the old bright green plastic tree and decided to make something more realistic to replace it. I looked for help from Ye Olde YouTube and found (unsurprisingly) a lot of cool tutorials. I bought some wreath made for miniature making from my local craft store and used that for the branches. I also bought small glass beads as the baubles. Putting the tree together was actually easy. I painted a round stick green so that it wouldn’t be so noticeable among the branches. Then I started gluing the branches. The upper branches are simply short pieces cut from the wreath and directly glued to the stick. As I got lower, I started forming fans out of the pieces. In the middle there are three to five pieces per fan. In the widest part of the tree there are five pieces in each fan. When I got those done, I glued them to the tree in layers.
To keep the tree upright I created a metallic holder. I cut a piece of a tealight’s “cup” and twisted it into a cylinder. Then I glued the cylinder onto a metallic pin base or something similar (I am not entirely sure what it actually is. I just found it from a drawer) and put the tree into the cylinder.
The last things I made were the decorations. I took the lights from the old Christmas tree and glued them to the stick as well. However, I had to do some electric work as one of the wires had broken but now all three lamps are happily lighting my tree. I made the baubles from the glass beads by sliding a piece of very thin wire through one and bending it into a loop. The tinsel is a pipe cleaner and the flag buntings I made to honour my very own motherland Finland. The star I simply cut out from cardstock, painted it golden and glued a piece of wire to the back to be able to place it on top of the tree.
This project only took a day. It was surprisingly quick and easy to create but certainly makes a big difference.
