A friend o mine asked me to make her a pair of earrings. She requested bees from the computer game Minecraft. I immediately started looking for reference photos on the internet. I searched for details such as the width of the stripes and colour of the eyes. Surprisingly, it took me quite a while to find a good and informative picture of the wings. After research I dug out all I needed.

I used three colours of polymer clay in total, black, yellow and brown. I rolled the yellow and brown clay into circa 2mm thick sheets and cut 1cm wide squares out of them. For the thick parts, yellow block in the front and brown one in the back, I simply put two squares together. Before attaching the two yellow squares together, I cut out two holes from the top square for the eyes. Then, I put the rest of the squares together and added the eyes. Finally, I put eye pins to the backs o the bees and let the bodies bake for 30 minutes.

While the bodies o the bees were in the oven, I started drafting the wing shape. Minecraft is known for its graphics consisting of squares and cubes so I used grid paper to figure out the shape. After that I drew different sized grids on a piece of paper and chose one. I coloured black the squares that were to be white. I placed a piece of clear hard plastic and traced the pattern with a needle and a ruler. Then I cut out the shape and lightly sanded the white areas to help the paint stick. I painted the wings with white acrylic paint and glued them on with superglue.

As a finishing touch, I sanded down each edge of the bee very lightly. I painted the light blue squares to the eyes and added the brown shadows on the sides with a brown alcohol soluble marker. Unlike water soluble ones, alcohol soluble marker doesn’t bleed when in contact with water-based varnish which I used to fix the paints and finish the surface. I also glued tiny black pieces of plastic as antennas. After all this, the only thing left was to add the earring hooks and the buzzers are ready to buzz.

Materials:

  • Polymer clay (Fimo or other)

  • Acrylic paint

  • Alcohol-based marker

  • Clear plastic

  • Superglue

  • Eye pins

  • Earring hooks
